Expert Profile: Dri Jones

Expertise:  I can answer questions in areas of guinea pig breeding (I do not support or encourage irresponsible breeding), making C&C (coroplast and cubes) cages, grooming your short or long haired guinea pig, easier ways to clip their nails and simple ways to care for cavies constantly growing teeth. I can give advice for introducing guinea pigs to other guinea pigs, info regarding the best bedding to use for owners of cavies with allergies (I have allergies too!) etc.. I can help diagnose common illnesses like mites, lice and other skin problems, colds, bacterial infections, sow delivery problems, and some circulatory problems. I will always encourage and recommend a veterinary visit and veterinary treatment if I judge necessary. Although there are many common illnesses that can be treated at home without the time and cost of expensive veterinary bills. I recommend the website guinealynx.com, it's a great website with lots of accurate and helpful information for cavy owners. I am experienced and knowledgeable in the area of guinea pig/cavy diets. I can help you decide the best hay and dry food to use for your guinea pig, and also the healthiest veggies and fruits for your cavy and the correct portion to offer your guinea(s). If your looking to make or buy toys, cavy cuddles, hay racks etc. for your guinea pigs I can name the toys that guinea pigs prefer over others and also how to make some toys and beds that are safe and fun, from items that you probably have around your house. I've owned guinea pigs for a long time and I can answer most questions about other things that come along with owning a guinea pig that I haven't mentioned in the above. Just ask! If I don't know the answer to your question, I will do my best and go out of my way to find a safe and accurate solution. One thing I cannot do is tell you why your guinea pig died. There are too many causes and reasons possible.

Experience in the area
I do not have any formal training. What I do offer is help from my experience. I've owned and cared for many guinea pigs and over time I have learned more from owning and caring for my own guinea pigs then I every could have from a book. I got my first guinea pig at age 12, and even before then I was continuously studying and learning about these fascinating, beautiful animals. I still can't get enough of these creatures. I love getting involved and helping animals in any way that I can. I volunteer at my local animal shelter, and I make it my goal to educate people and help them take better care of their guinea pigs. I currently own a pair of mother-daughter sows. I rescued them last January(of 2007) and my knowledge of cavies continues to increase daily as I strive to provide optimum care for them and offer advice and answers to all other guinea pig owners who ask.

Education/Credentials

Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Breeding is definitely controversial in this subject! Some people think that there are too many guinea pigs to rescue, and nobody should breed cavies, and then there are others who argue that and say that if there aren't breeders guinea pigs would be very expensive and hard to get as a pet. I also find that skinny pigs are a controversial subject with cavy owners too.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I hope everyday to achieve and learn more about and for these animals than I did the day before.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  I think it's amazing how not one guinea pig has the same personality or is like another guinea pig. Every guinea pig is different, and unique in its own way.
What do you like about this subject?  I love this subject because it involves my favorite animals, guinea pigs! I love to help other cavy owners knowing that each question I answer is helping a guinea pig that could even be half way around the world from me!
